Release Date: 06/01/03
Genre: R&B, Rock and Blues
Calvin James first solo CD, "Calvin James - It Ain't Over" is a blend of R&B, rock and soulful blues. Calvin's talents as a guitarist, vocalist and extraordinary songwriter are at their best in this recording which features eight of his original creations and additional selections written by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Annie Lennox.
From the "rebel" rousing chorus of "Learn How to Fight" to the smoky, vocal resolution of the title track "It Ain't Over", Calvin inspires emotion through storytelling lyrics, complex arrangements and fret-work that is as natural to him as breathing. Little Richard once said "Rhythm n' Blues had a baby...and it's called Rock n' Roll". This CD confirms the timelessness of the music. It's real rock and roll...real rhythm and blues.
Guest performances on this release include back-up vocals from Randy Meisner (Eagles), bass by George Hawkins (Delbert McClinton), B3 organ by Mike Finnegan (Crosby, Stills and Nash), sax from Vince Denham (Kenny Loggins), drums by Bill Lordan (Robin Trower) and contributions from Minnesota artists Doni Larson (bass), Bruce Pedalty (keys), Jim Greenwell (sax), Stan Kipper (drums), Larry Weigand (bass) and Tom Nystrom (back-up vocals). The recording sessions were held at Steamroom Studios in Los Angeles and Loud Neighbors Studio in Minneapolis. Final mixes were mastered by Lonnie Knight at Mosquito Shoals in Minneapolis.
Calvin James started the popular rise of the Minnesota Sound. Founder of the 60's band, The Stompin' Underbeats, James "Calvin" Johnson was the recipient of the first Connie Award for Best Guitarist in the Midwest. Moving to Los Angeles in 1968 and updating their name to Gypsy, the group replaced Chicago as the house band at Whisky A-Go-Go, recorded two albums for Metromedia, two for RCA and toured nationally with The Guess Who. Calvin's songwriting career boasts recordings by the 5th Dimension, The Steamers and Ray Charles and several Universal Studio movies and TV soundtracks. His current band, Calvin James and Bad Influence is based in Minneapolis, MN.
