The Electric Fetus opened in June of 1968 on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota with an initial inventory of music that by today's standards would be considered less than a small personal collection. As an alternative to mainstream retail they quickly gained the loyalty of their customers by listening to their requests and responding to their needs.
By the early 70's they had grown their inventory to include arts and handmade items that mirrored the cultural changes and alternative lifestyle of the customers they served. Having outgrown the West Bank space, they moved to Franklin and 4th Ave and that location remains "home" to the Minneapolis store.
The Electric Fetus continues to welcome patrons with the scent of patchouli; the sound of creaking hardwood floors. Their support of independent artists is evident by the posters covering the walls and pillars. The racks of CDs offer every genre of music. Customers appreciate the unique selection of jewelry, books, candles, incense, oils, clothing and gift items.
The partnership and appreciation between the Electric Fetus and their customers has continued for over thirty years and has evolved into a customer loyalty enjoyed by very few businesses. Out-of-town customers requested locations near to them and E. Fetus responded with stores in Duluth and St. Cloud. To accommodate other areas they opened their on-line store and are now able to serve customers everywhere.
When Calvin James and his independent publishing company, Vito Rococo, began looking for a partner to handle distribution of his solo CD, the importance of customer service and online ordering capabilities were at the top of their partnership requirements. The reputation of the Electric Fetus made them an easy first choice. We are glad to welcome them as part of our team and we are pleased to be a part of theirs.
